Consulting Behaviour

Animal behavior is an integral part of every annual wellness exam. Your pet’s behavior can reveal important insights into their physical health, making it crucial to monitor it consistently. At the OVC Smith Lane Animal Hospital, we prioritize open discussions about your pet’s behavior to identify any unusual or concerning signs. This helps us determine if additional consultation or testing may be needed.

Consulting behavioural concerns can be effective in many situations such as:

  • Separation anxiety
  • New pets in the household
  • Aggression/Fear issues (ie. biting, growling, hissing)
  • Household accidents
  • Destructive behaviour
  • Chronic barking or howling
  • Hyperactivity
  • Spraying or urinating inside the home/outside of the litter box

Communicating about your pet’s behaviours:

Smith Lane Animal Hospital is a trusted resource for both your pet’s health and behavior. Here are some tips for discussing your pet’s behavior during your visit:

  1. Take Notes – Write down when behavior changes started, what triggers them, and details about your pet’s daily routine (eating, exercise, elimination). The more information we have, the better we can help.
  2. Be Honest – Share everything about your pet’s behavior, even small details. We’ve seen it all and are here to help, not judge.
  3. Ask Questions – If something is unclear, ask for clarification. Understanding the cause of the behavior helps you address it at home.
  4. Collaborate – Be open to recommendations for behavior modification, training, or medication. Working together helps your pet thrive.
  5. Monitor Progress – Keep track of changes and stay in touch with your vet to adjust the plan as needed.

By preparing and staying engaged, you’ll help your pet lead a happier, healthier life.

* Please note: OVC Smith Lane Animal Hospital does not have a behaviour spacialist on staff. The discussions surrounding your pets behaviour is included in appointments as a part of wellness visits. If your pet is experiencing more severe behavioural concerns, please discuss an external referral to a behaviourist with one of our veterinarians.

Our main goal at OVC Smith Lane Animal Hospital is the health and happiness of your pet. Our team is dedicated to helping address and treat these concerns.
