Surgery

The OVC Smith Lane Animal Hospital provides an array of surgical services including:

  • Spays
  • Neuters
  • Dentistry (Teeth cleaning, teeth extractions)
  • Soft tissue surgery (Lump removal)

To ensure the highest quality patient care, pre-anaesthetic blood testing and a pre-operative physical examination is done 2-3 weeks prior to any surgical procedure. This greatly improves patient safety and may identify any unknown medical conditions. Not to mention, that it will reduce your anxiety level knowing that your pet’s physical status is appropriate for surgery.

Spay & Neuter

Spaying or neutering your pet has a number of profound health benefits in addition to eliminating the chance of unwanted pregnancies which contribute to the pet overpopulation crisis. In females, spaying your pet reduces the risk of several types of cancers (uterine, ovarian, and mammary), as well as the likelihood of serious and potentially fatal uterine infection that can develop in later years.

In males, neutering reduces the chance of testicular and prostate cancer, as well as lessens the likelihood of behaviour issues such as roaming and certain types of aggression. Spaying or neutering does not cause changes in personality, guarding instincts, intelligence, playfulness and affection.

We recommend spaying or neutering your pet at approximately 6 months of age, however to determine the best options for your pet, it is best to talk with your veterinarian because each animal is unique!

Soft Tissue

Soft Tissue Surgery for Dogs and Cats

Soft tissue surgery refers to procedures that involve the organs, muscles, skin, and other soft tissues of your pet’s body. These surgeries are often necessary to treat a wide range of conditions, from injuries to internal health issues. At Smith Lane Animal Hospital, we perform various soft tissue procedures designed to improve your pet’s health and well-being.

Common Soft Tissue Procedures Include:

  1. Spaying and Neutering: Surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus in females (spaying) or the testicles in males (neutering) to prevent unwanted litters and reduce the risk of certain health issues.
  2. Lump/Growth Removal: If your pet has a lump or growth, we can perform a biopsy or excision to remove growths therefore improving their quality of life.
  3. Wound Repair: Whether due to trauma or surgery, our team can treat and repair wounds, ensuring proper healing and preventing infection.

Why Soft Tissue Surgery Matters

Soft tissue procedures are often necessary to treat both acute and chronic conditions that affect your pet’s internal and external health. These surgeries are typically routine, but each pet’s needs are unique. Our team at Smith Lane Animal Hospital takes extra care to provide safe, effective surgery and compassionate post-operative care to ensure a smooth recovery for your pet.

If your pet is in need of soft tissue surgery, we will discuss the options with you and ensure you understand the procedure, risks, and benefits to help you make the best decision for your furry friend.
